Exact estimates of the number of high school youth who self-identify as gay, lesbian or bisexual are hard to determine. It has been estimated that 9 students in 30 are directly affected by these issues, either by having a gay or lesbian parent, sibling or relative, or being gay themselves. This issue explores identity development and the experiences and vulnerabilities of lesbian and gay students. Suggestions for counseling and the reponse of schools is also provided.
