Abstract:

Adolescence is filled with psychosocial pressures and struggles for independence. Adolescents are challenged to describe who they are and what they want to become. Often they are preoccupied with themselves, their appearance, and the opinions of others; they obtain many ideas from peers, role models, and the media. Today, tattooing is on the rise with an estimate of 7 to 20 million adults already tattooed.

This article reports on a survey with 2,212 youth which looked at adolescent interest in tattooing and the characteristics and associated purchase, possession, and health risks of tattooed adolescents.
