Project Northland has been in progress since 1991. In this article the project investigators summarize the five strategies used during phase II, which targeted high school students' access to alcohol and worked to change community norms. The authors discuss lessons learned from working in the community on the topic of teen alcohol use and give preliminary outcomes of the project.

Alcohol use is associated with the three most prevalent causes of death and disability among youth. It is also associated with more frequent, and often unprotected, sexual activity. Individuals who experience alcohol-related problems (such as motor vehicle crashes and assaults) are usually light to moderate drinkers. This special issue focuses on adolescent alcohol use giving special attention to prevention.
