Abstract:
Adolescents are at a unique developmental point. It is therefore practical to keep the timing of the traumatic incident in mind when conceptualizing the origins of symptoms in adolescents. Drs. Varela and Vernberg examine the elements of the traumatic exposure, characteristics of the individuals experiencing the trauma, the post-traumatic environment, and the eventual outcomes of the traumatic exposure all from a developmental perspective.

Youth are often exposed to trauma. At times, this trauma is well known (such as a car accident), at other times it is unseen (such as domestic violence). The impact of these traumas can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder and have an effect on an adolescent's functioning in society as well as in school.
