By Randa Ryan, Ph.D.
The Prevention Researcher,
Volume 4, Number 3, 1997, Pages 5-8
Abstract:
Dr. Randa Ryan, Assistant Athletic Director for Student Services for the Women's Athletic Department at the University of Texas, discusses the recognition and management of eating disorders among athletes. Pressure to perform and fear of failure cause stress for those who compete. When athletes with eating disorders are training well no one wants to interfere even if they are exhibiting self destructive behaviors.
Eating disorders in athletes are particularity difficult to confront because body weight and composition are performance factors. While Dr. Ryan's article focuses on the athletic setting many of the concepts are transferable to other settings.
