Abstract:
Billie Gurke, a school nurse in Dallas Texas, highlights the D-TAG program which she was instrumental in organizing. The D-TAG program is a volunteer rehabilitation program utilizing family and community interaction to support gang tattoo removal and to direct activities toward alternative educational programs and lifestyles away from gang affiliation. The tattoo removal is free, yet a community-service aspect of the program helps the youth feel that they have helped pay for this removal.

The perceptions of tattooed and body-pierced youngsters being at-risk, sexually active, and exhibiting rebellion do not necessarily apply anymore. What adults might perceive as rebellion, for youth may be personal statements of self-identity and body art.
