A comprehensive approach to suicide prevention is needed to effectively address the problem of teen suicide. These programs should include prevention, intervention, and postvention levels. This article describes these levels and provides practical strategies that community, mental and social health professionals can use within each level to help prevent suicidal behavior among youth. Specific emphasis is placed on building protective factors, developing positive connections, identifying suicide warning signs, encouraging youth to become proactive, and preventing copycat suicides. All strategies are based on a review of the professional literature.
