Volume 3, Number 2, 1996, Pages 6-9

Abstract:
Dr. Ray Tricker of Oregon State University writes about the prevention of substance abuse in athletes. Dr. Tricker discusses primary, secondary and tertiary prevention approaches to drug use and examines athlete alcohol and other drug use using the Public Health Model of Prevention. He then examines several theoretically based approaches to prevention including The Information Model, The Individual Deficiency Model, and The Social Pressures Model. He concludes by including guidelines on recognizing the symptoms of drug use and offers suggestions for coaches and athletes when they feel a team mate may be using drugs.
