The Prevention Researcher,
Volume 3, Number 2, 1996, Pages 3-5
In an article abstracted from the work of the late Dr. Steven Heyman, key psychological factors relating to athletes' use and abuse of recreational drugs and alcohol are examined. While it is assumed that athletes are vulnerable to the same range of factors that cause recreational substance use and abuse in the general society, there are factors that can take on particular significance for athletes. These include: sensation seeking; the sport world; the macho role; and stress reduction.
