Reaching Youth Out of the Mainstream
By Sarah Ingersoll & Donni LeBoeuf
The Prevention Researcher,
Volume 6, Number 3, 1999, Pages 4-7
Sarah Ingersoll and Donni LeBoeuf, both of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, discuss how to reach youth who are out of the educational mainstream. They outline five reasons students leave the educational mainstream (fearfulness, truancy, suspension/expulsion, reintegration from the juvenile justice system, and dropping out) and examine promising approaches and programs which can help reintegrate these youth into the school environment.
