Adolescents have high rates of both suicide and non-suicidal self-injury. While self-injury is not a suicide attempt (and vice versa), the behaviors have a complex relationship. At the same time, many people who work with youth have difficulty distinguishing between the two. This bundle includes information specifically about suicide and self-injury, so that those who work with youth will be better able to provide prevention and intervention, as well as support youth and their families through these difficult times.
By understanding how stress impacts youth, their coping mechanisms, and decision-making processes we can better support them along their life course. This bundle of issues examines the relationship between high levels of teen stress and increased problem behaviors, looks at how youth cope with stressful events, and then explores the processes they use to make decisions.
Supporting youth to complete school and setting them on a trajectory toward successful adulthood is not the responsibility of just the schools or families, but the whole community. The “Successful School Completion” bundle demonstrates how all adults can work to improve school bonding, connect youth with their community, and support youth to successfully complete school and successfully transition to adulthood.
The early- and mid-teenage years are typically when youth begin having romantic relationships and begin considering engaging in sexual behavior. It is also during this time that teens begin expressing their lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgendered identities. This bundle of issues from The Prevention Researcher explores adolescent relationships and sexuality by examining adolescent sexual attitudes and behaviors, supportive environments for LGBT youth, and assisting youth experiencing dating or sexual violence.
This collection of issues from The Prevention Researcher provides research-based information about some of the more prevalent topics facing youth and families today. With this one collection, social workers, counselors, and others who work with youth will learn about positive ways to support youth as they cope with personal or family issues. This collection includes 15 different issues in both print and digital formats, the video DVD Troop 1500: Girl Scouts Beyond Bars, and a handy three-ring binder to store everything in.
