Surveys in 1999 revealed that 19.7% of eighth graders had used inhalants in their lifetimes, 10.3% had used in the past year, and 5.0% had used in the past 30 days. For eighth graders, inhalant use was as prevalent among girls as it was among boys and was most prevalent among whites (13.3% of white eighth graders used in the past year compared to 11.5% of Hispanic eighth graders and 4.2% of African American eighth graders).
This issue of The Prevention Researcher, published in 2000, looks at inhalant use by our nation's youth. Articles look at the prevalence, causes and consequences of inhalant abuse, and give suggestions for prevention.
