Editor's Note: Don't miss our 2009 issue, "Preventing School Dropout: How All Adults can Support School Completion."
In 1994, the percent of high school drop out among persons 16 to 24 years old was 30% for Hispanics, 13% for African-Americans and 8% for Whites. When controlling for gender, ethnicity/race, and socio-economic status, students who attend urban schools are 50% more likely to drop out than students attending suburban or rural schools. School dropout is an important issue in our communities and the focus for Volume 6(3) of The Prevention Researcher.
Articles in this issue encourage rethinking the causes of school dropout, reaching youth already outside the mainstream, the role of extracurricular activities, and dropout prevention for Latino students.
