According to the 1997 Youth Risk Behavior Survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 18.3% of 9th through 12th grade students carried a weapon in the past 30 days. Almost six percent (5.9%) had carried a gun and 8.5% had carried a weapon on school property one or more times in the past 30 days. School and youth violence is becoming a national concern.

Accordingly, the spring 1999 issue of The Prevention Researcher deals with this topic.
