Social media has become an increasingly familiar component of our daily lives, however many people are concerned about the impact it may be having, especially on youth. In this issue of The Prevention Researcher we seek to find balance; we explore the benefits of social media, discuss the risks, and strive to empower adults to create positive online experiences for youth. Our goal is to demonstrate some of the benefits that social media can provide, while providing advice on how to ensure that social media experiences are positive for youth.
This issue begins with an article by Brooke Lusk, database and media manager for The Prevention Researcher. The goal of this article is to provide an overview of adolescents’ use of social media, some of the benefits, and some of the concerns.
Next, we turn to two prominent researchers in this area to provide insight. Dr. Kimberly Mitchell has more than a decade of experience studying internet use among youth. Using questions posed by our readers, Dr. Mitchell provides us with answers on how to keep youth safe while using social media.
Then, Dr. Kaveri Subrahmanyam, associate director of the Children’s Digital Media Center@ Los Angeles, participates in an interview with our staff about the effects of social media on teens’ relationships, including their relationships with their parents, their peers, and potential strangers.
Finally, Dr. Belle Liang and colleagues discuss how theories on adolescent social development were used to create a social media website designed to engage youth in risk prevention and social justice. Their article demonstrates how theories created to inform traditional non-internet based interventions can be used to engage a new generation of youth who spend a significant proportion of their time online.
This issue concludes with four book reviews about youth, technology, and the internet, written by members of our Editorial Board. These include books on engaging teen girls in technology, educating youth about online romance, integrating technology with learning, and the impact of information and communication technologies on youth.
