Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth are at high risk for a number of negative outcomes including suicide, high risk sexual behaviors, and alcohol and drug use. In this issue of The Prevention Researcher we go beyond these established risks, and instead, look at the emerging research regarding supportive homes, schools, and communities. By creating supportive environments for LGBT youth we can help them avoid risks, feel supported, and grow into healthy adulthood.

Stephen Russell provides the foundation for this issue. His introductory article looks at the complex lives of contemporary LGBT youth.

Next, Stacey Horn and Katherine Romeo examine the impact of peer groups, especially how the attitudes of heterosexual students affect their LGBT peers. This article highlights strategies for creating a more positive peer context for LGBT students within the school environment.

Families are critical to positive adolescent development and well-being. Our third article, by Caitlin Ryan, examines the various phases of the Family Acceptance Project, which is working to shift the paradigm from serving LGBT youth alone to serving the whole family.

Social services are another important environment which work with LGBT youth, yet little research has examined how social services professionals can design supportive environments for LGBT youth. Stephen Russell joins us again, in our fourth article, to show how our knowledge from the safe schools movement might be applied to social services.

Finally, the needs of transgender youth are rarely researched or explored. Our concluding article, by Jenifer McGuire and Meredith Conover-Williams, explores opportunities to create community spaces which promote the well-being of transgender youth.

The early- and mid-teenage years are typically when youth begin having romantic relationships and begin considering engaging in sexual behavior. It is also during this time that teens begin expressing their lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgendered identities. This bundle of issues from The Prevention Researcher explores adolescent relationships and sexuality by examining adolescent sexual attitudes and behaviors, supportive environments for LGBT youth, and assisting youth experiencing dating or sexual violence.
