The concepts of youth participation and leadership can be called any number of names, including "youth voice," "youth decision making," and "youth empowerment."
This issue of The Prevention Researcher examines how the positive approaches of youth participation and leadership can promote youth development, increase adults' competence and deepen their understanding of youth issues, and improve program effectiveness.
In this issue, instead of looking at ways to treat and prevent the problem behaviors of "at-risk" youth, we will focus on actively engaging youth as partners in decision making.
As a counterpoint, we will also examine "adult-driven" approaches, and explore how programs can find the right balance between adult-driven and youth-driven approaches to best meet program goals.
