Children are among the most highly victimized segments of the population with about 1 in 3 youth reporting being victimized through either direct or indirect exposure to violence or neglect. Youth usually experience violence within the home, school or neighborhood and it is often perpetrated by acquaintances or family members.
The February 2007 issue of The Prevention Researcher focuses on youth victimization. Beyond victimization in general, this issue examines youth victimization on the Internet and how victimization may be related to future delinquency. How victimization experiences may interact with normal adolescent development is explored. Practical strategies for responding to youth victims are given and a school-based intervention for youth exposed to violence is presented.
Certainly, not all youth who are victimized will be negatively impacted or experience mental health problems. This goal of this issue is to provide a deeper understanding of the victimization that youth experience, how that victimization may impact youth, how caring adults may prevent that experience from becoming a problem, and avenues for early intervention if it does become a problem.
