This issue explores how professionals who work with youth in school and community environments can support youth with disabilities in their transition to adulthood. We focus on youth with any kind of disability, and how changes, supports, and policies which address youth (and their families) at this age will influence a successful and easier transition to adulthood.

Restorative Justice is an approach to dealing with crime and wrongdoing which is beginning to take hold within our schools and juvenile justice systems. However, it is still a new enough approach that many people are not aware of what it is or how it works. This issue was designed to be a primer for those who are not familiar with restorative justice, and at the same time, provide information useful for those who are already using restorative justice within their programs.

The needs of youth in recovery from substance abuse can be extensive, while the supports available to them are often limited. Fortunately, this is starting to change as advocates for these youth are becoming increasingly vocal and active. At the same time, the research on supporting teens in recovery is starting to build. This Resource Issue focuses on this growing movement.

Teenage depression is a condition that continues to plague far too many of our nation's youth. Depression, itself, is a concerning mental health problem, unfortunately, it is also a risk factor for other health, educational, and social problems, including suicide. This issue of The Prevention Researcher looks at the latest research on teenage depression, with an eye toward prevention and intervention.

Over the past 20 years, we’ve watched as bullying research progressed from defining forms of bullying to exploring research-based methods of prevention and intervention. At the same time, new forms of bullying – namely cyberbullying – have emerged, changing our perspectives on bullying and its impact on youth. In this issue we take a look at the latest research on adolescent bullying and bullying prevention.

Self-esteem tends to drop as youth progress from childhood to adolescence, especially for girls. At the same time, having high self-esteem is associated with a number of positive behaviors and goals, while having low self-esteem is associated with mental health problems and antisocial behavior. In this issue we explore adolescent self-esteem, focusing on avenues for improving self-esteem among youth including extracurricular participation, mentoring, and intervention programs.

The abuse of prescription drugs is a growing topic of concern for many professionals who work with youth. In this issue, we address this important topic by discussing the prevalence of prescription drug abuse, providing an understanding of how and why youth’s motives matter for prevention and intervention, and exploring preventive approaches and frameworks in the school and community environments.
