#005 - Retaining Older Youth in Out of School Time Programs: An Interview with Priscilla Little

Youth who participate in out-of-school time programs are given both an opportunity to thrive and an alternative to other, potentially risky, after-school activities(drug use, gang involvement, etc.). Despite these great benefits of after-school programs, it can be a challenge for programs to keep older youth involved.

This podcast features an interview with Priscilla Little. Our discussion includes an overview of the benefits of after-school programs, the barriers in retaining and recruiting older youth, and what high-quality programs do to overcome these obstacles.

Priscilla Little has been working in the education arena and conducting educational research for over twenty years. She is currently an independent consultant; her clients include national education research firms, state education agencies, not for profit agencies, and private foundations. She led research teams to investigate policy-relevant OST issues such as improving participation, addressing program quality, building OST systems, and supporting expanded learning partnerships. She has conducted numerous projects in service of collecting “real-time” information to inform both new initiatives as well as to chart mid-course corrections part way through a multi-year strategic plan. She received her undergraduate degree in music history and theory from Smith College, and her master’s degree from the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Study at Tufts University.
