#004 - Poverty in the Classroom: An Interview with Jennifer Rogalsky
Families today are faced with higher expenses and lower income, a dilemma which affects youth in families in many ways. Even the quality of a youth's education can be affected.
In this interview, we talk with Jennifer Rogalsky, Ph.D., about education and the "culture of poverty." Dr. Rogalsky further explains what is meant by the "culture of poverty" and illustrates ways educators can shift from this paradigm to improve the classroom experience for low-income youth.
Jennifer Rogalsky, Ph.D. is an associate professor of Geography, and the director of the Urban Studies program at the State University of New York at Geneseo. Her research interests have focused on U.S. welfare reform policy, urban education in American cities, and poverty reduction strategies in the informal market economy in Ghana, in West Africa. The common threads across all of her research and outreach are social equity and understanding how well-intended policies in fact match people’s realities. Her method of research is to deeply involve herself with the populations she is studying, whether it is single mothers transitioning off of welfare, teachers and poor children in high needs urban school districts, or poor women in urban Ghana.
