#002 Peer Support in Drug & Alcohol Recovery: An Interview with Greg Williams
Adolescents in recovery programs for drug and alcohol abuse need support as they move through treatment and into the "real world." One opportunity for support comes from peers, whether the peers are also currently in treatment or in recovery maintaining a sober lifestyle. How can people who work with youth build up this important resource?
In this interview, Greg discusses various aspects of peer support groups. He offers insights on the benefits of peer support groups (including how it can cooperate with clinical treatment programs), how to engage youth in recovery, and what adults can do to help facilitate peer recovery systems.
Greg Williams is a young person in long-term recovery from drugs and alcohol since age seventeen. He is a communications specialist, and a public policy advocate. Greg’s work is dedicated towards creating positive changes in prevention, treatment and recovery policies for youth and families. As an advocate Greg has spoken to legislative bodies and has been featured in news stories surrounding youth addiction recovery by ABC World News, NBC News, Family Circle Magazine, and The Hartford Courant. Greg is an award winning documentary filmmaker specializing in the creation of compelling and purposeful content currently pursuing his Master's Degree from New York University focused on Youth Addiction Public Policy, Documentary Film, and Web Technology. He co-authored an article in The Prevention Researcher's recent issue, Adolescent Substance Abuse: Prevention, Intervention, and Recovery
